JOHN R. EDWARDS, MD
Neurosurgeon

Dr. Edwards was born and raised in Utah Valley. He received a BS degree in microbiology at Brigham Young University, and graduated from the University of Iowa Medical School at the top of his class. He completed his neurosurgery residency at Indiana University, where he trained at one of the busiest and most well-respected neurosurgical practices in the country.

Dr. Edwards has been practicing in Utah Valley since 2015, and has performed thousands of surgeries. His use of the latest and most minimally invasive surgical techniques allows patients to heal faster and have the best outcomes.

Some of his unique specialties include scoliosis, spinal deformities, brain and spinal tumors, and motion preservation spine surgery, including lumbar and cervical artificial disc replacements. He is grateful for the opportunity to use these and other surgical skills to serve and give back to the people in his home state.

He is a bold and creative patient advocate who collaborates with a broad spectrum of providers to give patients the best available care.

He and his wife, Marie, have four loving, energetic boys. As a family they enjoy basketball, skiing, golf, and walks around their neighborhood.

  • Dr. Edwards’s goal is not to treat your symptoms. His goal is to get you healthy. That’s why he collaborates closely with other practitioners – physical therapists, pain doctors, ortho and sports medicine, chiropractors, dieticians, and many more. With his community of integrated practitioners, you will receive well-rounded care that’s hard to find anywhere else.

Additionally, Dr. Edwards leads the patient outreach and wellness programs himself, so you feel taken care of by your surgeon.

  • Dr. Edwards’s approach to healing does not always require surgery. In fact, if other non-surgical treatments will work better for long-term health, he will recommend them as a preferred course of action.

Yet, if you do need surgery, you can enter the operating room with confidence that you’ll receive the most state-of-the-art procedures and experience minimally invasive techniques that ensure a faster healing process.

Additionally, Dr. Edwards has developed many new ways for patients to manage post-operative pain and healing. In many cases, you won’t even have to use opioids or other potentially addictive medicines in the healing process. This adds to faster recovery speeds which his patients experience regularly.

  • While Dr. Edwards is passionate about his work as a Neurosurgeon, he also loves to ski, play basketball, golf, and hike with his family. He also loves to read, especially science fiction novels. He and his wife, Marie, have four very active boys.

His goal as a physician is to help others return to doing the things that bring them joy. When you come in for a consultation, you will be asked what your #1 goal is. For some, it’s the ability to walk or ride a bike comfortably again. For others it is their ability to lift and hold their grandchildren.

Dr. Edwards and his staff at Summit will work hard to help you achieve that goal - or, as they frequently say it - to help you get your life back.
