When is it safe to get back behind the wheel?

Returning to driving after surgery depends on your ability to safely operate a vehicle. Your safety and the safety of others is the priority, so it’s important to wait until you feel fully in control and free from limitations.

    • Do not drive if you are distracted by pain

    • You should feel comfortable and able to fully focus on driving

    • Do not drive while taking narcotic pain medications

    • These medications can impair reaction time and judgment

    • You must be able to perform all driving movements safely

    • This includes:

      • Turning your head

      • Checking blind spots

      • Reacting quickly if needed

  • You may return to driving when:

    • You are off pain medications

    • Your pain is well controlled

    • You can safely operate your vehicle without limitation
