Optimizing Surgical Outcomes
Getting Your Life Back
At Summit, we believe the best surgical outcomes happen when the right procedure is performed for the right patient at the right time. In many cases, surgery is not needed at all. For others, surgery may be one part of a comprehensive care plan designed to help you return to the life you enjoy.
That care plan always includes the foundations of health, good nutrition, regular movement, physical therapy, and strong social support. Whether or not surgery becomes part of your treatment, these elements are essential to healing and long term wellness.
When surgery is recommended, outcomes are best when patients are prepared. Readiness for surgery means building strength, improving overall health, and addressing risk factors ahead of time. These steps help support safer surgery and a smoother recovery.
Physical therapy plays a critical role in this process. Many patients are able to avoid surgery altogether through a committed course of physical therapy. When surgery is still needed, prior physical therapy leads to better results. Patients are stronger, more conditioned, and better prepared for recovery. We view this as a continuum of care that supports the best possible outcomes.
Minimum Surgical Requirements
To be considered for surgery, patients typically must meet the following criteria:
Body mass index (BMI) below 35
Smoking cessation for at least 3 months prior to surgery and for 12 months following surgery. A nicotine test will be ordered to confirm compliance
Bone health evaluation when appropriate. Some patients may be asked to complete a DEXA scan to assess bone quality. Certain surgeries are not recommended in the presence of osteoporosis
Completion of physical therapy. Patients are required to complete 12 visits over a minimum of 6 weeks within the past year for their current condition before surgery can be scheduled
For patients with diabetes, hemoglobin A1C must be below 7.0
Our Commitment to You
We understand that these requirements may raise questions or feel overwhelming. Our team is always happy to explain why these guidelines exist and how they protect your safety and recovery. During your visit, we can talk through each requirement and help you create a plan to work toward these goals if surgery becomes the right next step.
