Incision Care After Surgery

Proper incision care is an important part of your recovery. Most incisions require minimal maintenance, but daily monitoring is essential to ensure proper healing and to catch any concerns early.

    • Most incisions are closed in layers with absorbable sutures

    • These dissolve on their own and do not require removal

    • Some incisions may be closed with staples, which will need to be removed later

    • Check your incision daily

    • Watch for signs of infection, including:

      • Redness

      • Increasing warmth

      • Opening of the incision

      • Drainage (especially non-bloody)

    • Contact our office if you notice any concerns

    • Do not submerge your incision for at least 4 to 6 weeks

    • Avoid baths, pools, or hot tubs

    • This helps prevent infection from bacteria in standing water

    • Mild redness or itching can occur and may be a reaction to:

      • Surgical prep

      • Dressings or adhesives (such as surgical glue)

    • Notify our office if symptoms develop or worsen

    • You may be advised to use an antihistamine and continue monitoring
