GLP-1 Medications and Surgery

If you are taking a GLP-1 medication such as Ozempic, Wegovy, or Mounjaro, there are important steps to follow before surgery. These medications can affect how your stomach empties, which impacts anesthesia safety. Please review the guidelines below to ensure you are properly prepared for your procedure.

    • Stop GLP-1 medications 4 weeks before surgery when possible

    • At a minimum, stop at least 2 weeks prior to surgery

    • Do not eat anything after midnight the night before your surgery

    • These are standard pre-surgery fasting guidelines for all patients

    • Follow a clear liquid diet for 48 hours before surgery

    • This is required to reduce risk during anesthesia

  • You may have:

    • Water

    • Clear fruit juices (no pulp)

    • Black coffee (no cream or milk)

    • Sports drinks (Gatorade, Powerade)

    • Broth

    Avoid:

    • Coffee with cream or milk

    • Dairy products

    • Protein drinks

    • Juice with pulp
